Florida mom leaves toddler in car while shopping at Publix

Tejada Publix

A woman in Key Largo thought she had a perfectly good reason to leave her toddler alone in a car at Publix while she went shopping on a Sunday night.

When deputies asked her why she left her 1-year-old baby alone in the car while she perused the produce aisle, she told them this:

“This is Key Largo. Nothing happens in Key Largo.”

Florida’s either very boring, or full of chaos, depending on where you live. There’s no city here that balances safety and excitement, it’s pretty much one or the other. Despite that, we still live on planet Earth, and even the most painfully uneventful towns are dangerous.

Even though the air conditioning was running and she felt no laws were broken, deputies arrested 30-year-old Yanese Tejada on a child neglect charge and booked her into county jail at Plantation Key.

She later told a media relations officer that she didn’t want to wake the baby up, and that’s why she left her 1-year-old sitting alone in a parking lot.

A watchful observer called 911 after waiting 10 minutes and seeing that the mother had not yet returned.

She was released from jail later that night, according to flkeysnews.com. No information on her bond has been released yet.
