Active Shooter Situation Reported at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School

Parkland (WTFF) – Broward Sheriff’s reported an active shooting situation at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.

In a tweet, Broward Sheriff’s said they are “working a developing incident regarding a report of active shooter located at 5901 Pine Island Rd, Parkland. Here’s what we know so far: deputies are responding to reports of a shooting at Stoneman Douglas High. There are reports of victims. PIO will be on scene 3:15pm.”

7 News reports that a person was seen beeing wheeled into a Coral Springs Fire Rescue ambulance. It was noted that he was also on his phone.

Margate Fire Rescue called this a “mass causality incident,” meaning at least 20 people have been injured.

This is the 18th school shooting in 2018 so far, according to data from Everytown.

UPDATE: Seventeen people were shot to death and several others wounded, reports the Sun Sentinel.

Officials have identified the Florida school shooting suspect as 19-year-old Nikolaus Cruz, a former student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School who had been expelled for disciplinary reasons. (ABC7)

Investigators started analyzing Cruz’s social media accounts, which the sheriff said contained material that was “very, very disturbing.”

He showed warning signs before the incident.

“We were told last year that he wasn’t allowed on campus with a backpack on him,” said math teacher Jim Gard, who said Cruz had been in his class last year. “There were problems with him last year threatening students, and I guess he was asked to leave campus.”

Also worth noting: President Trump repealed a law that prevented certain people with mental illness from buying guns, and also proposed millions of dollars in cuts to the gun background check system. The language in the NICS Improvement Amendments Act of 2007 was revoked on Dec. 19, 2016 after H.J.Res.40 became law. We’re gun-lovers in Florida, but we should also have some common sense. Until gun sales are no longer profitable, or until we take the policy-making power away from lobbyists who don’t care about human lives, mass shootings will remain as American as apple pie.

That being said, the origin of senseless violence is in fact the human mind, and not guns. Also, some perfectly sane people have been committed to mental institutions, and some completely insane people have never been committed. It could be a dangerous slope to let the government decide who’s crazy or not, and therefore decide who gets guns and who doesn’t.

Both sides of the gun argument have validity. We should listen to each other and work together to find an appropriate solution. Obviously what we’re doing now is not working.
